Opening, under development, changed hands

* Banterra Bank and Banterra Corp. will hold a grand opening of its $7 million Banterra Centre at 1650 N. Kingshighway from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. Events will include "Score Big With Banterra" activities with an NCAA Final Four Tournament theme. A Special Olympics "Sizzlin' Shootout" will be held in the parking lot from 3 to 5 p.m. Banterra will donate $2.50 to Special Olympics for each shot made. The Special Olympics of Missouri basketball team will be on hand and the donation will be doubled to $5 if they make the same basket. Guests also can register to win prizes including a 60-inch Vizeo LED SmartTV, Lifetime 50-inch portable basketball system, Banterra prize-loaded duffle bag and giveaways and discounts from neighbors Plaza Tire Company and Missouri Running Company. Banterra is offering, as a grand-opening special, a savings of $450 on home mortgage applications taken through April 30, when combined with opening a Banterra checking account. * Hartle Management Agency is "performing a major rehab on 48 senior apartments" on South Shawnee Boulevard in Jackson, according to Chad Hartle. Completion is expected in May.

* Dr. David P. Crowe retired in October from his orthodontics practice, which has locations at 1736 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, 502 W. Main St. in Jackson, 720 S. One Mile Road in Dexter, Mo., and in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Dr. Nathan G. McGuire bought all four locations, and signage recently was updated to reflect the change in ownership. McGuire was a childhood patient of Dr. Crowe's and joined his practice in 2006.

* Academy Sports + Outdoors is nearing completion of its new store on Siemers Drive, between Sam's Club and Kohl's Department Store. A soft opening is planned June 28, with a grand opening event to follow July 12. The retailer stocks a "broad assortment of quality hunting, fishing and camping equipment and gear along with sports and leisure products, footwear, apparel and much more." The Texas-based company operates more than 150 stores throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

* The Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Southeast Missouri State University is sponsoring the first annual CIE Creativity Festival Thursday through Saturday. The festival is "an effort to foster creative ideas and action across campus and throughout the Cape Girardeau community." Events are open to the public and include a kickoff party 11 a.m. to 1 p.m Thursday at Kent Library; a HootUp from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lagniappe by Celebrations, 11 S. Spanish St.; coffee with entrepreneurs from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday in Dempster Hall Room 128; a Creativity Crawl though downtown Cape Giradeau from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, beginning and ending at West Bank Bistro, 340 S. Lorimier; a variety of Creativity in Action Sessions throughout the week and a 5K costume fun run/walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, beginning and ending at CIE, 920 Broadway. Preregistration is not required. * The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will hold a workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. April 20 at 32 N. Main St. Peter Nguyen and Nick Toebaas will discuss documenting artwork with photography and how to put together portfolio submissions for juried exhibitions. Nguyen is the director of the Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University. Toebaas is an adjunct instructor in the art department at Southeast. * The Scott County Women in Agriculture will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center, 6458 Highway 77, Benton, Mo. Members will host a show-and-tell session called "Cleaning and Organization Shortcuts, Tips & Tricks." Women with an interest in gardening, cooking, farming, family activities and helping the community are invited. Ray's of Kelso won first prize in the best steak category, Susie's Bake Shop & Restaurant in Sikeston won best bakery and Benton's Antique Centré Mall took the prize for best antique shop in the 2013 Best of Rural Missouri Readers' Choice Contest. Based in Jefferson City, Rural Missouri has been the voice of Missouri's electric cooperatives since 1948. It has a circulation of more than 540,000, making it the largest paid-circulation monthly publication in Missouri. Also recognized by readers were the following: best restaurant runner-up, Lambert's Café, Sikeston; best barbecue runner-up, Dexter Bar-B-Que, Dexter; and best farmers market, editor's choice, Downtown Sikeston Farmers Market, Sikeston. Winners are featured in the April issue of Rural Missouri, which can be read online at www.ruralmissouri.coop.

Development help for new businesses

The Missouri Alliance for the Development of Entrepreneurship is holding its fourth annual "MADE In Missouri State Entrepreneurship Competition" to promote new local business. The competition takes place in two phases, with the final phase at the Missouri State Fair on Aug. 12. There are "youth" and "open" categories, and first-, second- and third-place winners at the state level will be awarded cash grants for investment capital. The contest is open to Missouri businesses that have been open less than three years. Preliminary questionnaires outlining a business idea, and leadership, management, community and environmental plans for implementation must be submitted by May 31. Finalists will be selected and asked to create a complete business plan and a short presentation, with guidance provided by various technical assistance professionals around the state. Judges will score entrants' business plans, financials, trade show booths and short presentations. Winners will be announced at the fair's closing ceremony.
