SIKESTON, Mo. -- Area farmers were honored Jan. 27 at a Farmer Recognition Luncheon hosted in conjunction with the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce's monthly meeting, reported the Sikeston Standard Democrat. Justin Landers was named Outstanding Young Farmer by the Sikeston Jaycees; Thomas E. "Jake" Fisher received the Agribusiness Service Award of the Year; and Melissa Silverthorn was named Farm Woman of the Year. Joe Heckemeyer accepted the Farm Family of the Year Award on behalf of himself, his parents Tony and Betty Heckemeyer and his brothers, Andrew and Matthew Heckemeyer.

DALE NAMED DIRECTOR OF COUNTY BOARD
Bob Dale was hired as executive director of the Cape Girardeau County Board for Developmental Disabilities, formerly known as the SB40 board. As of Jan. 1, Dale is responsible for overseeing distribution of the board's levy to existing programs and agencies that receive funding through Senate Bill 40. He will also review new requests for program funding and develop and implement new programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dale has more than 20 years of experience working with people with disabilities.
CAPE CVB HAS NEW DIRECTOR
Dana Gordon is the new director of public relations and marketing at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau. She is a recent graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, with a degree in public relations and marketing and experience in coordinating events. Gordon replaces Stephanie Lynch, who now serves as public relations account executive for the Missouri Division of Tourism at Hoffman Lewis Advertising Agency, St. Louis.
RED CROSS ADDS VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
Ann Douglass-Click is the new volunteer services coordinator at the American Red Cross Southeast Missouri chapter. She works with volunteers in the 11-county service area of Perry, Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Scott, Stoddard, Mississippi, New Madrid, Dunklin, Butler, Wayne and Pemiscot counties. Douglass-Click has worked with the developmentally disabled, in human resources and for the past two years for the Census Bureau.

STONE NAMED POLICE CHIEF
DEXTER, Mo. -- Sgt. Sammy Stone was appointed police chief of the Dexter Police Department. He has been with the department for 26 years and began serving as interim police chief in November, when chief Paul Haubold resigned.
ALSUP NAMED ASST. SUPERINTENDENT
DEXTER, Mo. -- Dr. Roger Alsup, current principal at T.S. Hill Middle School, will serve as assistant superintendent for Dexter School District beginning with the 2011-12 school year. Alsup has worked in the district for 20 years and will fill the role vacated by Bryce Matthews upon his retirement.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Robert Culler, Hayti, Mo., to the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority. The authority makes capital available to Missouri farmers, particularly independent producers, agribusinesses and small businesses at competitive interest rates on a scale to make a major impact. Culler, executive vice president and community business developer for First State Bank and Trust Company, was nominated for a term ending June 30, 2014.

Steve Halter, director of the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce, and Tracey Glenn, vice president for organization and leadership development at the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, each completed the Institute for Organization Management program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The professional development program is a comprehensive course of study with four annual sessions that focus on professional growth and development for association, chamber and other not-for-profit professionals. Graduates of the institute receive IOM recognition signifying their completion of 96 hours of course instruction in not-for-profit management. They can also earn points toward the Certified Chamber Executive or Certified Association Executive certifications.
CAPE ART TEACHERS HONORED BY STATE
Sharon Williams and Elizabeth Thomas, longtime art teachers with the Cape Girardeau School District, were recently recognized for the ultimate in education excellence from the Missouri Art Education Association. Thomas was named 2011 Art Educator of the Year, and Williams was named Missouri Retired Art Educator of the Year. They have been invited to the state and national conventions in March to receive their recognition. The Missouri Art Education Association each year accepts nominations honoring outstanding art educators in 10 categories.
