Steve Effrein, vice president and loan officer at Ozarks Federal Savings and Loan Association in Farmington, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Bank Leadership Committee of the Missouri Bankers Association. The committee plans an annual seminar that focuses on training for bankers.
Two Cape Girardeau-area pharmacists at Medicap Pharmacy, Ben Talley Jr., R.Ph., and Dave Charlier, R.Ph., have been presented with national awards at the company's recent national annual meeting. Tally was named to the Master Capsule Club, an award granted to those Medicap Pharmacy franchisees who the company says has displayed outstanding sales performances during the past year. Charlier was named to the President's Club, an award presented to the Medicap Pharmacy franchisee who represent the top 20 percent of the nationwide system by store sales during the past fiscal year. The President's Club is the "best of the best" in the Medicap nationwide network of independently owned and operated retail pharmacy locations.
Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center assistant director Dean Whitlow has been elected vice president of the Missouri Council of Career and Technology Administrators. Whitlow was elected vice president of the group that is made of administrators from secondary technology schools and colleges statewide at a conference held in Springfield in July. Whitlow -- who oversees student financial aid, adult enrollment and full-time adult programs at the center -- will serve a four-year appointment after which he will advance to president-elect and then president of the group.
Cheryl Hill and Jeanne Van de Ven attended the 2002 Zonta International 56th Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden, from June 28-July 4. Hill and Van De Ven represented the Zonta Club of
Cape Girardeau Area, District 7. Over 1,300 Zonta delegates from 70 countries and geographical areas attended the conference titled "Building Zonta in the 21st Century-Inspired by the Challenge of Change." The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau is a chartered club of Zonta International, which is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. There are over 34,000 members in more than 1,230 clubs in 70
countries.
Charles Stone, Joe Stone, J. Skii Reid and John Miller of Cable Direct TV, located in Fredericktown, recently completed an intensive course in business operations provided by CVS Systems Inc., the authorized distributor for DISH Network Products and Services in the Midwest. Cable Direct TV sells and installs Dish Network in 10 area counties.
James Harlan, R.Ph., owner of Super D Express Pharmacy in Poplar Bluff, is the new president of the Missouri Pharmacy Association, having served on the association's executive board for three years. He was installed at the association's recent annual meeting at Lake of the Ozarks. The association represents 1,600 state pharmacists.
Rebecca Lohmann has completed a three-day training class sponsored by the Missouri Society of CPAs. Lohmann is a certified public accountant with Schott & Van de Ven Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau. The class was the second in a series of staff training and focused on auditing.
Steve Brown and Cathy Willen of the Audiology Center in Cape Girardeau have recently completed the AuD doctorate degree in audiology. The AuD degree is a new doctoral program offering advanced training in clinical audiology. The degree is relatively new to the United States. They received the degrees from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, a branch of the Kirksville School of Medicine.
Brown and Willen are partners in the Audiology Center.
Cape Girardeau lawyer James Laramore of Cape Girardeau has been re-elected to the Board of Governors of the Missouri Bar. The lawyers of Missouri, voting in districts across the state, voted to retain Laramore and 14 other incumbents as well as vote in four new members.
Lonnie Griggs, the general manager of Red Lobster in Cape Girardeau, has been promoted to director of operations for Smokey Bones restaurants in the St. Louis area, Southern Illinois and Kentucky. Darden, the Orlando-based company that owns Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Smokey Bones
restaurants, announced the promotion. Griggs had recently been awarded the company's Diamond Club Award. The award honors managers whose restaurants rank in the top 5 percent of both company restaurant revenue and guest satisfaction scores during the previous fiscal year when compared to all 660 Red Lobster restaurants across North America.
Ivan Irvin, a commercial real estate broker in Cape Girardeau for 37 years, has been appointed regional director for Alliance Exchange Group. Irvin has been a leader in commercial and industrial real estate since 1965. He also has served as real estate commissioner in Missouri for six years. Alliance Exchange Group has been doing tax-deferred exchanges since 1975. Irvin will continue to run his private commercial real estate firm.
David Plassman, a certified public accountant with Schott & Van de Ven in Cape Girardeau, has completed a class on employee benefit plan compliance requirements. The training was on reporting and disclosure requirements. Schott & Van de Ven serves as an independent third-party administrator for employee benefit plans and Section 125 deferred compensation plans.
Falcon Communications Inc., headquartered in Malden, has been selected by Pat Summerall Productions to be a featured segment on "Champions of Industry." As part of this future television program, Falcon received recognition in the Aug. 12 edition of Forbes magazine, in a section titled "Summerall Success Stories." The "Champions of Industry" will air on Sept. 17 at 6 a.m.
Patsy Ann Holifield has recently completed the training and testing necessary to receive a real estate brokers license. Holifield has been with Century 21 SEMO Realtors of Kennett for the past year as a sales associate.
Edward (Andy) Riley II has passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam. Riley, a staff accountant at Riley, Stubbs and Cato LLC in Dexter, was one of only 190 candidates in Missouri to pass the exam. A total of 702 took the exam during the May.
Ron Hitt of Chrisman LP Gas Inc. of Dexter was elected district director for District 7 on the Missouri Propane Gas Association Board of Directors. The association, based in Jefferson City, functions as a trade association for its member propane gas marketers and their associates.
Lester Maevers has been inducted into the Missouri Grocers Association Hall of Fame during the group's annual convention on Aug. 24 at Osage Beach. He was chosen based on his long record of contributions to the grocery industry in Missouri. The Maevers enterprise, which began in 1968, is currently made of three Save-A-Lot stores in Southeast Missouri and commercial property in Jackson, Cape Girardeau, Chaffee and Sikeston. The Missouri Grocers Association is a non-profit, statewide organization based in Springfield. It represents about 1,500 retailers, wholesalers, brokers, distributors, vendors, suppliers and manufacturers that make up the state's grocery industry.
Dr. Tom Critchlow recently presented a lecture on photorejuvenation to the Kansas City Otolaryngology Society as well as to ENT Meeting at the Missouri State Medical Association General Meeting in St. Louis. Photorejuvenation is a new technique used to revitalize sun-damaged skin without down time. Critchlow is the medical director of the Esthetic Centre in Cape Girardeau.
John Peters of Peters Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. in Cape Girardeau has been accredited by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association. After an extensive training course, Peters can install geothermal heat pump systems.
