Market House Theatre presents 'Music Man'

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Market House Theatre in Paducah will present "The Music Man" on its stage March 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and March 12 and 13 at 2:30 p.m. A cast of 40 young performers has been assembled for this musical adapted especially for performers under the age of 18. Greatest Baroque hits on tap at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Symphony will continue its 2004-2005 concert season Thursday with the concert "Brandenburg and More." The concert is a collection of greatest hits from the Baroque era, featuring J.S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. It will feature the Cavani String Quartet, visiting artists from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Harwell Art Museum showcases religious sites

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Saturday through March 27, the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff will feature "Religious Sites Around the World of Yesterday and Today." The exhibit will show the works of Bill Kohn, whose paintings are of churches, temples and mosques from around the world from the 15th century B.C. through modern times. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call (573) 686-8002.

Southeast student is finalist in photo contest

Michael Bricknell of Cape Girardeau County, a sophomore at Southeast Missouri State University, has been selected as a finalist in a national college photography contest sponsored by Serbin Communications. Serbin Communications publishes Photographer's Forum magazine. Bricknell submitted four black and white photos for the contest. For more information about the contest, visit www.serbin.com.

Redhawk Concert Band performs Thursday

Civil War re-enactment planned in Sikeston

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Civil War re-enactment of the battle of Sand Ridge will be held March 11 to 13 in Sikeston. March 11 will feature living history all day at Scott Matthews' farm located two miles west of Interstate 55 on U.S. 60. Signs for the entrance will be posted on U.S. 60 east of U.S. 61. March 12 will feature the re-enactment of an actual battle fought in 1862 to capture the railroad and depot in Sikeston. Sikeston Depot features Grimsley's artwork

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Tirrell Grimsley, an advertising designer for the Southeast Missourian, will be the featured artist at Sikeston's Depot Museum throughout March. An opening reception with the artist will be held Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Depot. For more information, call (573) 481-9967.

Illinois vineyard plans March Madness festival

POMONA, Ill. -- Von Jakob Vineyards in sponsoring a March Madness festival on March 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. The festival will feature live music and wine and food will be available. The vineyard is located in the Shawnee Forest at 1309 Sadler Road in Pomona, about 30 miles from Cape Girardeau. The festival will be held rain or shine. The Artist Studio opens downtown Saturday

An open house will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Artist Studio, a new artist workshop being opened by Central High School art teacher Judy Barks-Westrich. The studio will serve as Barks-Westrich's working studio, with her works on display and for sale. She'll also teach art classes in the studio, with the first class for adults in watercolor starting next week. Sign-ups begin Saturday. The studio is located at 38A N. Main St.

Local entries sought for poster competition

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is seeking entries from artists throughout the region for its 2005 ArtsCape poster competition. The competition is open to anyone 18 years and older, and the work must celebrate the arts and the Cape Girardeau or Southeast Missouri region. Entries must be original, two-dimensional, full color works and can be in any medium. Photographs are not eligible. They must be in vertical format, standard size 18-by-24-inches, and must contain the words "ArtsCape" and "2005" somewhere in them. The entry fee must be in the Arts Council office by April 2. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place and the winning design will be featured on posters and T-shirts to be sold at ArtsCape on May 21.
