CVB to host storytelling workshop Monday

The Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau will host a storytelling workshop with professional storyteller Lynn Rubright from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the CVB office on Broadway. Rubright has spent 35 years as a professional storyteller and scholar. The workshop will teach people how to turn family history into stories. Depot museum looking for volunteer help

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center is currently looking for volunteer help. Volunteers would assist at the depot for three hours each month. For more information, call (573) 481-9967.

Local art students win awards at show

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Private students of local art teacher Brenda Seyer recently received six ribbons at the 71st annual Paducah Art Show held in late April, sponsored by the Women's Club of Paducah. Tori Malizzi won first and second place in the grades K-2 category; Elizabeth Allen won honorable mention in the grades 3 through 5 category; Becky Michelson won first place and Ashley Mann took second and third place prizes in the grades 6 through 8 category.

Southeast Public Radio begins 'Crossing East'

Southeast Public Radio will air the first in an eight-part series of the show "Crossing East" beginning 9 a.m. Sunday on 90.9 FM. The series traces Asian immigration into America, its impact on the shaping of the country and its global ties and is the first radio series on Asian American history ever produced. Southeast Explorer visits Sikeston Depot Museum

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Southeast Explorer Mobile Learning Center will be on hand at the Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19. The Southeast Explorer will present an exhibit on Missouri history from prehistoric times to the height of the Little River drainage project. Michael Comer, site administrator at the Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site, will give special programs on the Civil War at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, call (573) 481-9967.

Bootheel Regional Art Guild opens contest

The Bootheel Regional Art Guild is taking submissions for its 22nd annual Judged Fine Art Exhibition, which begins May 21 in Sikeston. Artists must be at least 18 years old and live within 100 miles of Sikeston. For entry forms or more information contact Ellen Hahs at 651-2301 or e-mail her at ehahs@semo.edu.

Red House hosts American Indian family stories

The Red House Interpretive Center will host a Cape Girardeau Public Library program Saturday on historical family readings at 11 a.m. and American Indian stories with Chief Paul White Eagle at 1 p.m. For more information, call Jane Randol Jackson at 204-2331.

Bank, science center take educator input

In an effort to expand its outreach in the Southeast Missouri area, the St. Louis Science Center will host a roundtable discussion with area educators on May 22. The Science Center recently entered a partnership with Montgomery Bank, with outreach as a primary goal of both organizations.

Discussions are designed to get input from educators on the types of exhibits and information they would like to see showcased in Southeast Missouri.

Two sessions will take place: the first in Sikeston at 4 p.m. and another at Southeast Missouri State University at 7 p.m. For more information call Shannon LeGrand at (573) 472-5476.

Illinois State Fair grandstand tickets now on sale

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Performers for the six grandstand concerts at this year's Illinois State Fair have been announced.

Performers include: Bow Wow, Mario, B-5 and Jibbs on Aug. 11; Montgomery Gentry and Jeff Bates on Aug. 12; Foreigner, Blood Sweat and Tears and Loverboy on Aug. 13; Big and Rich, Cowboy Troy and Hello Dave on Aug. 18; Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls on Aug. 19; and Carrie Underwood and Phil Vassar on Aug. 20.
