Broken Grass at River City Yacht Club

Broken Grass, a Carbondale, Ill., band that combines bluegrass with rock and jazz, will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday Sept. 7 at the River City Yacht Club.

The band includes guitarist Adam Kaczmaret, mandolinist Sam Boss, bassist Deven Kulkarni, drummer John Brejc, fiddler Rick Johnson and electric guitarist Zacc Harris.

Discovery Days celebrates archaeology

Discovery Days, beginning Saturday at the University Museum, will provide activities in September celebrating Missouri Archaeology Month.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Sept. 7, the museum will present storytelling by Marilyn Kinsella, hands-on archaeology activities, a weapons and tools station and a flintknapping demonstration by Kinsella's husband, Larry.

Discovery Days is free and open to children age 7 and up and their families. Those who attend are free to come and go as they please during the day.

"We are hoping to provide an opportunity for adults and children to come in and get to participate in hands-on archaeological experiences and experiments," says Andrea Morrill, the museum's curator of education. "... This is bringing archaeology to life."

On Sept. 17, University Museum curator of collections Jim Phillips will present a lecture titled "Archaeology and Artifacts: A Look at Collecting practices of the Late 1800s." The talk will be given at 7 p.m. at the museum.

After the lecture, Phillips will lead a guided tour of the museum's famous Beckwith Collection of Mississippian artifacts. He also will be available to lead tours of the collection weekdays throughout the month.

On the second Discovery Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28, Lisa Crews will demonstrate Southeastern Native American pottery techniques. She will produce shell-tempered ceramics.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn the traditional technique of fingerweaving.

Music at fair begins Wednesday

The music at the SEMO District Fair grandstand kicks off Wednesday Sept. 11 with a performance by Perfect Stranger and a karaoke contest beginning at 7 p.m.

Thursday night at 8 p.m. it's Montgomery Gentry.

The Honky-Tonk Tailgate Party Tour featuring Rhett Akins, Daryle Singletary and Wade Hayes will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13.

The finale at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, will be Southern rockers .38 Special.

Kennett native opening for Wynonna

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Kennett native David Nail opens for Wynonna Judd Saturday at the Farmington Civic Center.

'Chick Flicks' offered in film series

The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology will present a film series titled "Chick Flicks" this fall. The romantic dramas are all British releases little known in the U.S. and focus on such issues as divorce, death, infertility and nontraditional relationships.

The first film in the series, "Jack & Sarah," will be presented Tuesday. "Maybe Baby" will be shown Sept. 30, "Blow Dry" on Oct. 23, "High Heels and Low Lifes" on Nov. 15" and "The Hidden Fortress" on Dec. 6.

All films are at 7 p.m. in Room 108 in Parker Hall.

Folk singer at university

Folk singer Robert Hoyt will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at the University Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

River City Rodders plan car show

The River City Rodders will host their 25th annual car show Sept. 15 at Capaha Park.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon with awards presented about 3 p.m.

The entry fee is $10 per vehicle. Prizes will be awarded in 32 classes. There will be three special classes for motorcycles.

Bellamy Brothers followed by Pink at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Bellamy Brothers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the SIU Arena. Tickets are $20.

The band first made the charts in 1976 with "Let Your Love Flow." Other hits include "Old Hippie," "Sugar Daddy," and "Reggae Cowboy."

Performing the next night will be Pink, whose album "M!ssundaztood" is No. 9 on Billboard's top 200 list. Tickets are $29.50.
