Festival for single-reed instruments Saturday

Southeast Missouri Single Reed Day will be presented from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University.

The festival is for clarinet and saxophone teachers and students.

John Cipolla, a professor of clarinet and saxophone at Western Kentucky University, is one of the two featured clinicians. He is principal clarinet with the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra and the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra in New York City. He has performed with the show "CATS" on Broadway for several years.

The other clinician is Michael Dean, assistant professor of clarinet and saxophone at Southeast. He is a clarinetist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and the Southeast Chamber Players. He has performed at Carnegie Hall.

Nashville singer in benefit concert

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Nashville singer-songwriter Hunter Moore will play a benefit concert Saturday at the Malone Street Grill.

Admission to the 7 p.m. concert is $5. Proceeds will benefit Sikeston Missouri Arts, Inc. Moore also gave demonstrations this week in the Sikeston, Charleston and New Madrid County schools.

'Sundays at Three' series to begin

The first in a concert series called "Sundays at Three" will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday at Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

Jeffrey Noonan, a guitar instructor at Southeast Missouri State University, will perform along with the group Early Music St. Louis. They will offer a program of English music from the 17th century. Performers will play period instruments and authentic reproductions.

The other performers will be William Bauer on Baroque violin and viola d'more, vocalist Nancy Bristol and harpsichordist Neal Richardson.

Daisy artist featured in Silver Dollar City festival

BRANSON, Mo. -- Daisy, Mo., artist Dodie Eisenhauer has been chosen to participate in the Festival of American Music and Craftsmanship continuing through Oct. 25 at Silver Dollar City.

A member of the Best of Missouri Hands, she will exhibit and demonstrate making her wire-mesh creations through Oct. 5.

She operates Village Designs at Grandma's House in Daisy.

NYC composer to perform at Cedarhurst

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. -- New York City composer David Heckendorn will play his own music in a concert Sept. 27 at Cedarhurst.

The 7:30 p.m. concert in the Main Gallery of the Mitchell Museum is free and open to the public.

Heckendorn, a reed specialist, will be joined by four faculty members from Southern Illinois University's School of Music in playing a program of classical and jazz music. The Cedarhurst Choral Project also will perform.

Wolfgang Puck to provide food at art museum

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Art Museum and celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck will open a restaurant together at the St. Louis museum in October.

Puck's company also operates a restaurant at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Menus will be developed by Puck and the executive culinary staff from his nationally known restaurants Spago and Chinois.

Puck also has been engaged as the museum's exclusive caterer.

Cape Girardeau artist featured at Anna Center

ANNA, Ill. -- The work of Cape Girardeau artist Marty Riley will be exhibited during October at Shawnee Community College's Anna Center.

Riley is a nurse and mother who in the past few years devoted more time to painting. She works mostly in acrylic but also dabbles in glass and sculpture.

Much of her work has consisted of pet portrait commissions, the subjects ranging from birds to hunting dogs. She painted a Bengal tiger inside Central High School. She also has painted animal-themed murals in private homes.

Riley is a member of the Visual Arts Cooperative at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. She will discuss her work with students at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Anna Center. The public is invited to attend.

Chicago City Limits, Leo Kottke to perform at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The improv comedy troupe Chicago City Limits will perform Oct. 3 at Shryock Auditorium at Southern Illinois University. They will be followed to the auditorium the next night by legendary acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke.

Both shows are at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to Chicago City Limits are $21 with a $6 discount for senior citizens 55 and older and children 15 and younger.

Songwriting workshop Oct. 4 in Marion

MARION, Ill. -- A workshop for songwriters will be offered Oct. 4 in Marion.

Susan Tucker, the author of two books on songwriting, and Nashville songwriter/producer Kim Copeland will lead the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. workshop at the Executive Convention Center, 2600 W. DeYoung St.

There will be song critiques and an opportunity to pitch songs to a publisher.

Lewis and Clark quilts to be displayed at MAQS

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Lewis and Clark expedition quilts will go on display Oct. 4 at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society.

Quilts in the contest were challenged to depict some aspect of the expedition.

The show will remain on display through Jan. 3. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through October.

Visiting poet in reading Monday

University of Tasmania poet Anne Hugo Kellas will read from her work at 4 p.m. Monday at the Indian Room in the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

Kellas is the author of the books "Isolated States" and "Poems from Mt. Moono."

The reading is free and open to the community.

Spaces remain for arts and crafts bazaar

Spaces are still available in the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's 33d annual Christmas Arts & Crafts Bazaar.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The 31st annual Pink Palace Crafts Fair will be presented Oct. 2-5 in Audubon park.

The fair will offer more than 200 booths.

Ten Tenors to perform Oct. 10 at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Three Tenors have been upgraded to the Ten Tenors in a show scheduled Oct. 10 at Southern Illinois University's Shryock Auditorium.

The tenors are Australian men ages 23 to 33 whose experience includes opera, musical theater, jazz and rock.

Their reputation has been build on their covers of pop tunes like "Dancing Queen," "Staying Alive" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" along with their repertoire of operatic standards.

The Community Counseling Center Foundation semiannual Antique and Collectibles Show will be presented Oct. 12 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building.

Cabaret singer at Grandel Theatre

ST. LOUIS -- Cabaret singer Karen Akers will perform a show titled "Feels Like Home" Oct. 14 through 19 at the Grandel Theatre.

Akers was in the Broadway musicals "Grand Hotel" and "Nine" and has appeared on the TV shows "Cheers," "The Tonight show" and "Hart to Hart." She starred in the PBS specials "Presenting Karen Akers" and "Karen Akers: On Stage at Wolf Trap."

New York singer in house concert Oct. 16

Cheetowaga, N.Y. singer-songwriter Greg Klyma will perform Oct. 16 in Cape Girardeau in the Underberg House Concert Series.

Klyma combines socially-conscious ballads, comedy and musicianship in a show that is likened to a cross between '70s outlaw country, folk-rock and Appalachian back-porch picking.

He has been featured on the radio program "Acoustic Cafe."

His most recent CD is titled "Not a Complicated Guy."

Lewis and Clark events in Southern Illinois

A free lecture series titled "When Lewis & Clark Came to Southernmost Illinois" will continue with programs Oct. 8 in Cairo and Oct. 29 at Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis.

At the program at the Cairo Public Library, there will be a presentation on early survey equipment and celestial navigation by Mitch Garrett. Hasan Davis will portray York, William Clark's slave.

The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Museum Room at Fort Massac State Park, Tim Bischoff will portray hunter-interpreter George Drouillard, and Fred Shaw will portray Neeake, a Shawnee elder.

In addition, a display including life-size figures of Lewis and Clark, navigation and surveying equipment along with American Indian, medical, writing, flora, fauna and bird exhibits is scheduled to open at the Cairo Custom House Museum Nov. 1.

St. Charles Corps of Discovery re-enactors are expected to arrive at Fort Defiance at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers south of Cairo Nov. 15. An honor guard from Fort Campbell, Ky., will participate in the opening ceremony at 2 p.m. An exhibit barge will be open for tours. They will remain through Nov. 19.

The Corps of Discovery II, the National Park Service history exhibition, will arrive at Fort Defiance Nov. 20 and remain through Nov. 24.

Bike, canoe and hike wildlife refuge

ULLIN, Ill. -- National Wildlife Refuge Week will be celebrated at the Cache River Wetlands Oct. 11-13 with biking, canoeing and hiking.

The Tunnel Hill Trail Bike Ride Oct. 11 will take place along the abandoned Norfolk Southern Railroad line stretching 42 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, Ill. For registration information, phone the Cache River State Natural Area at (618) 634-9678 or (618) 658-2168.

The canoe trips Oct. 12 will leave from the Lower Cache River Access. Two tours to Eagle Pond and four tours to the state champion bald cypress are scheduled. Contact the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge at (618) 634-2231 to make a reservation.

Two guided hikes through the Cache River State Natural Area will be offered Oct. 13. The 9 a.m. hike to Heron Pond will highlight the natural and cultural history of the area. 'German Art Now' symposium Oct. 16-17

ST. LOUIS -- An international symposium titled "German Art Now" will be presented Oct. 16-17 at the St. Louis Art Museum.

It will examine the impact of German art on the second half of the 20th century. The symposium will coincide with the opening of the exhibition "German Art Now" at the museum. It consists of more than 40 works from the museum's collection.

Saxophonist, singer to perform at Jazz at the Bistro

ST. LOUIS -- Multi-Grammy Award nominee Kenny Garrett and the Kenny Garrett Quartet will perform at Jazz at the Bistro Oct. 22-25, followed by gospel-oriented jazz vocalist Lizz Wright Nov. 5-8.

Shows will be presented at 8:30 and 10:15 nightly.

'A Midsummer Night's Dream" opens Oct. 24

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Theatre and Dance will present Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Oct. 24 through Nov. 2.

The play is directed by Dr. Robert Dillon Jr. and Paul Zmolek. Shows will be presented at 8 p.m. Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 30-Nov. 1, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 2.

Two special high school matinees will be presented at 10 a.m. Oct. 28-29.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $14 for faculty, staff and senior citizens and $13 for students.
