Bill Beard, left, and Wayne Freeman show the largemouth bass they caught at Castor River in this photo published March 14, 1960. Both were Broadway businessmen. Beard owned Beard's Sport Shop and Freeman operated Wayne's Grill.

Beard's Sports Shop, 818 Broadway, and Wayne's Grill, 816 Broadway, are shown in this picture taken by G.D. Fronabarger in December, 1961. Nearby buildings are the Esquire Theatre, 824 Broadway, and Southwestern Bell on the corner. Hartford Hill operated a gift shop at 814 Broadway next to Wayne's Grill.

Local go-kart enthusiasts built a track near the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport and in 1961 hosted "world-champion go-kart racing" sponsored by The World's International Kart Association. It was said to be one of the finest kart tracks in the nation.

Cape Central's Tigers were the Class A winners in the district track and field meet in May 1959 at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau. From the left, standing: Coach Rex Miller, Gale Corbin, Willie Williams, Clarence Ackman, Smitty Lundaburg, Weldon Benthall, Jerry Shuck, Barry Davis and Coach Jim Lohr. Kneeling: Bill Sisco, Jim Holder, Johnny Putnam, Hermann Johnson, Scott Browning, Sam Stausing, Allen Hill and Mack Stone. Absent when the picture was made were Bob McNeely and Don McDowell.

July 20, 1948 Southeast Missourian. For the first time in the history of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts, horsemanship has become a part of the summer camping program at Camp Lewallen on St. Francis River. Above, The Missourian photographer caught a group of scouts on horses owned by the council and quartered in the camp’s corral. Camp Ranger Henry Hefner directs the program, teaching youngsters how to ride safely, and scouts eagerly wait in line to get their turn on the wooded Ozark trails. (G.D.
