Captured on Film #186

In November 1981, the board of the Cape Girardeau Civic Center announced plans for a new building to be constructed at 201 N. Spanish. This old center was a truck repair garage obtained in 1973. It was to be razed and a new facility constructed at the same site. However, a building at 232 Broadway, which formerly housed a car dealership, was purchased and renovated for the new Civic Center. Designed to "help our neighbors help themselves," the Civic Center was founded in 1959 as a multi-racial organization to provide educational, recreational and cultural facilities for Cape Girardeau's disadvantaged citizens.
