This mystery photo was published in the Dec. 21, 1960 Southeast Missourian. It shows Mrs. Kenneth Burnham in front of Kroger in the Town Plaza receiving a new 1961 Volkswagen. She won a contest by figuring the actual weight of the car and groceries. Kroger opened a new store in the Town Plaza Shopping Center in Cape Girardeau on Aug. 11, 1960.

A 1955 Buick Century is pictured in front of the Travelers Cafe on Highway 61. Cape State Bank would be built on the property north of the restaurant. The hill to the west was removed for construction of the bank.

Oct. 9, 1962 Southeast Missourian. Sunny skies and peppy music was the menu at Jackson today as bands from the district converged on the county seat for the annual band festival to be climaxed after today’s parade by a public concert tonight of the massed musicians. These youngsters were among the first to arrive and tune up their instruments.
