Pictures of the Past #3
G.D. Fronabarger left the Missourian boxes and boxes of negatives. What he didn't leave were IDs for them. Pictures of the Past features some of Frony's images we've partially identified. Fred Lynch found the answer to this picture puzzler. The Missourian published it Sept. 10, 1955: This large propeller, largest of the type used by towboats on the Mississippi River, is 6 1/2 feet across and weighs three tons. This particular prop is from the Blaske Line's Memphis Zephyr, one of the largest tows. Allen Reed, a workman at the Missouri Dry Dock & Repair Co., is shown standing by the big screw. It was brought to the local firm for repair after being considerably damaged in river chores.

Jackson High School's band members came out in their new uniforms in October 1960, the black red and white outfits showing flashily in a bright sun. The band was 95 members strong. High school marching bands continue to meet annually in Jackson for a big band festival.

Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to identify this small grocery. Shirley Tomlinson suggested: "There used to be a small store across from Womack's drug store on Sprigg and Locust. (It) could this be the one."

We believe this is a funeral home, but we don't have an identification for it. Jesse James of Ocala, Fla., wrote: "I believe picture #7 is the Ford and Sons Funeral home on Sprigg Street in the '50s before they remodeled it."Kevin Ford confirmed James'guess and said the photo was taken in 1950.
