June 14, 1957 Southeast Missourian: This group of Cape Girardeau youths went by bus to Warrensburg on Saturday to join others from over Missouri for the annual Boys State event sponsored by the American Legion. Juden Post of the Legion; Bob Tooke, Walter Grebing, Gary Evans, Paul Vandivort, Joe Oldfield, Jim Finch, Jim McFarland, John Reid, Tom Bartinikas and Benny Pinkston. These nine lads participated in the finals of the Optimist Club oratorical contest at the club meeting Thursday night. They are, from left, standing: Kenneth Lipps, William “Skip” Howell, Roger Preston, Bill Swick and John Oliver; seated: Mike Rushing, Jerry Bullock, Buddy Penny and Ronnie Beasley. Winner of the contest was Kenneth Lipps, who also won the title last year. He received a $10 prize and will represent the club in the contest at the district convention in Alton, Illinois. Talisman roses, the club’s flower, formed the centerpiece for the 10th anniversary of the organization of Rose Hills Garden Club. To celebrate the event, a tea and special program were held at the home of Mrs. Paul G. Wolff on Thursday afternoon. Pictured at the tea table are, from left, Mrs. D.J. Rush, a member of the River Hills Garden Club who assisted with the organization; Mrs. Willard T. Kunze, a charter member; Mrs. C.W.
