Pictures of the Past #73
G.D. Fronabarger left the Missourian boxes and boxes of negatives. What he didn't leave were IDs for them. Pictures of the Past features some of Frony's images we've partially identified. Central coach Lou Muegge was lifted on the shoulders of his players, after they won the 1954 state high school basketball championship. The game was played at Houck Field House on March 6, 1954. The Tigers defeated the Christian Brothers Cadets of St. Louis 79-55. Lou Muegge died July 14, 1955 at a hospital in St. Louis where he had gone for a physical examination a week earlier. He was 51. He had suffered a heart attack five months earlier while playing golf at the Country Club.

A big group of husky of State College freshmen reported Aug. 28, 1960, at Houck Field House to receive football equipment for the grid season. At the right, Coach Kenneth Knox held a bundle of shoulder pads and seated at the desk was an assistant, John Schneider. Standing above him was Jim Hamby, also of the coaching staff.

Grins were plentiful as a group of unidentified Girl Scouts roasted marshmallows. Does anyone recognize these girls? Kathy Swan wrote: "In the photo of the Girl Scouts roasting marshmallows, I think the blonde - second from the left - is Gail Tibbles Smith Hennecke, and the small dark-haired girl on the right is Beth Slinkard."
