A 10-year-old boy was injured when a car struck him while he was riding his bike in the 200 block of Capaha Trail Friday afternoon.

Cape Girardeau traffic officer David Valentine didn't release the injured boy's name. Valentine classified his injuries as "moderate to severe" but said the boy was conscious when an ambulance transported him to the hospital.

The boy was hit by a Ford Explorer driven by Krisinda Cook, who lives on the street, when he was riding his bike into the street out of a driveway at 264 Capaha Trail, Valentine said. According to witness accounts, two boys were riding their bicycles out of the driveway and into the street when the boy was struck by the vehicle, said Valentine. The boy wasn't run over by the truck's wheels, but his bicycle was.

Valentine said witnesses reported seeing the injured boy ride directly into the Explorer's path. He estimated the Explorer was traveling about 20 miles per hour on the curvy road.

Cook didn't see the boy she hit until her vehicle had already struck him, Valentine said. A citation likely won't be issued, he said.

"It was an accident," Valentine said.
