THE CANDIDATES: Republican Peter Kinder is seeking a rare third term as Missouri lieutenant governor, pointing to his experience in the office and touting efforts to oppose the federal health care law. Democrat Susan Montee argues Kinder has neglected the office's advocacy duties for seniors and veterans. She is seeking statewide office after losing re-election as state auditor in 2010. Former Republican state Rep. Cynthia Davis is running under the Constitution Party banner and is endorsed by Missouri Right to Life.

THE JOB: The lieutenant governor takes over if the governor dies or is removed from office. The officeholder also advocates for seniors and military veterans, serves on state housing, tourism, and other commissions and presides over the 34-member state Senate while breaking tie votes. The lieutenant governor is elected independently from the governor.

THE HISTORY: The only Missourian to win three terms as lieutenant governor is Frank Harris, who first took office in 1933. No incumbent lieutenant governor has lost re-election during the past century.
