The trained police dog is not vicious, as one might infer from his looks, but is a sensitive, highly organized intuitive creature with fine discriminating qualities. This modern manhunter, the worth of which was demonstrated during the World War. The German, French and Belgian armies had a great number of these dogs in use. Several breeders around Jackson are now offering the dogs for sale.

All manufacturing plants in Jackson which depend on coal for fuel are now working without or with a loss, owing to the inflation in the price of coal, due to the national rail and coal miners strike. The coal miners strike was ended shortly after this was reported.

The local Red Cross holds a special Baby Day in Jackson. Information, formulas and typhoid vaccination were handed out and administered. Mrs. Caruthers, county nurse, and E.E. Huber conducted the work for the Red Cross. Clinics were also held during Homecomers.

Heat wave brings record numbers out to the Jackson pool. There were 1093 persons in attendance for the week and 263 in one day.

Jacksonians got a faint glimpse of the northern lights, Monday and Tuesday night. The luminous meteoric phenomenon was seen both nights after 10 p.m. and only faintly. Because of atmospheric conditions the lights were more visible on Monday night.

The heat wave and drought has cut egg production. Ruben and Bob Schnurbusch of Old Appleton operate an egg route between here and St. Louis are not able to get enough eggs to supply their customers.

1972

Mayor Paul Leonard made the opening address on stage at Homecomers on Monday Aug. 14.

Jackson Police Chief David M. Gellatly said his department is busy going over numerous weekend offenses ranging from peace disturbance and glue sniffing through shoplifting and illegal possession of marijuana.

Lou Ann Crites, Terry Gallagher, Martha Fay Grantham, Gena Hahs, Terry Denise Klaus, Mary Lou Below, Carol Sue Koenig, Gloria McClane, Pamela Starr Nance, Brenda Steffens, Bonita A. Seabaugh, Ellen Swan, Donna Werner, Wren Wiley and Kathy Moll will compete for the Jackson Homecomers Queen. Martha Fay Grantham winsthe title.
