Two Illinois men were in Southeast Missouri Hospital Tuesday night after a head-on collision on the Illinois side of the Cape Girardeau Mississippi River bridge that tied up traffic for more than an hourMonday evening.

At 8:10 p.m., Perry Jennings, 36, of McClure, Ill., was driving a rental truck heading east on the bridge when it crossed the center line and struck a pickup driven by Brian Shelton of Cache, Ill., according to the Illinois State Police. The police report said "the wind caught his vehicle," said Fred Schubert of the Illinois State Police.

Shelton suffered serious injuries and was in intensive care Tuesday evening.

Scott Karcher, 27, of Marion, Ill., a passenger in the Jennings' truck, underwent surgery and was still in the hospital Tuesday evening. His mother declined to give any more information.

Another passenger in Jennings' vehicle, Nicholas Jennings, 16, was treated and released from the emergency room at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Police issued Perry Jennings a summons for improper lane usage, Schubert said.
