A wire mesh angel made by Dodie Eisenhauer of Daisy is flying high atop the governor's Christmas tree in Jefferson City, Mo., this holiday season.

"As a member of the Best of Missouri Hands, we were invited to make ornaments for the governor's tree, and I got to thinking that I was probably the only one that made Christmas tree toppers, so I thought it was worth a shot," Eisenhauer said.

Eisenhauer sells wire mesh angels and ornaments, as well as other creations, out of her business called Grandma's House, which is actually in her grandma's house.

The governor's tree is decorated this year with more than 175 ornaments handmade by 71 juried members of the Best of Missouri Hands, a statewide organization of about 200 artisans.

Eisenhauer is one of approximately 120 juried members, indicating that her work has been judged at the highest level of quality craftsmanship and creativity in Missouri.

"Our organization is working hard to educate people on how to market their art and the business side of the art industry," Eisenhauer said.

Part of permanent collection

The works were chosen in a joint effort by the Governor's Mansion Restoration Office and first lady Lori Hauser Holden. Displayed on the Great Hall's 25-foot Christmas tree during the holiday season, these ornaments will then become part of a permanent mansion collection.

Eisenhauer was present Dec. 6 when the Missouri state Christmas tree was lit.

"It was a storybook night -- to see the mansion, participate in the lighting ceremony and meet the governor and his wife," Eisenhauer said. "It's the first time we have had the support of a governor's wife for the state's artists and that was very nice.

"Next stop -- the White House!"
