Dr. J.P. Downey, a member of the Family Physicians Group and board certified family physician, recently attended an approved course on occupational medicine for the primary practitioner.

The meeting was sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. The course was designed to update skills in the prevention and treatment of occupational diseases and injuries.

Also presented a this meeting was information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Downey received Category I CME credits for participation in this course.

ORAN Cheryl S. Eftink, formerly of Oran, has been selected to receive the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) Lawrence W. Gardner Platinum Medal Honor Award. The award is one of four top awards presented nationally by the agency.

Eftink, who now resides in St. Mary's, Iowa, is assistant district director for business development for the Des Moines District Office.

The Lawrence W. Gardner award is a special award to honor those employees who are among the most highly respected by agency managers and colleagues. Eftink was selected from the agency's 3,500 employees from throughout the country and is the first to win from the four-state area that included Missouri.

Eftink has been with the SBA for 20 years and is active in several local, state and national organizations for small business owners. She has been a featured speaker at numerous small business events and was instrumental in establishing the Agency's local Women Business Ownership programs.

Eftink was born and raised on a farm in Scott County. She graduated from Oran High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University.

She and her husband Bill, who is also from Oran, have two sons; Scott is 18 and Rick is 15.
