A Benton man is dead and a Benton woman hospitalized after a traffic accident Saturday on U.S. 60 near Paducah.

David Buchannan, 28, died after the pickup he was driving collided with a car, said Terry Long, chief deputy sheriff of McCracken County, Ky.

A passenger, Jennifer Cotner, 28, was seriously injured, Long said.

The pickup apparently tried to pass the car at the same time the car attempted to make a left turn, Long said.

The impact of the collision drove the pickup off the road and caused it to roll over several times. Buchanan and Cotner were both thrown from the car, Long said.

He said Buchanan's mother called him from a hospital in Southeast Missouri and said she was in intensive care, but checks with Southeast Missouri Hospital, St. Frances Medical Center and Missouri Delta Community Hospital turned up no one by that name.
