Workers with Penzel Construction of Jackson connected detonator wire to explosives packed inside supports on the old Interstate 55 Diversion Channel bridge Tuesday afternoon.
Moments later, the bridge was cleared of all traffic, and four explosions reduced the old bridge supports to rubble.
As a cloud of dust rose from beneath the new bridge, debris was thrown 500 feet from the explosion. The state awarded a $10,681,982 contract for the work to Penzel.
