CAIRO, Ill. -- Water customers in Cairo are being asked to conserve water because of low levels on the Ohio River.

Illinois American Water announced in a news release over the weekend that water conservation would be necessary for Cairo customers, and that customers are asked only to use water for critical needs like cooking, bathing and medical needs.

"Customers should use only what they absolutely need and

be sure to not waste water," said Steve Keith, Illinois American operations superintendent for the Cairo area. "Conserving water will help ensure continued water service to customers and fire protection for the community."

On Sunday the utility released a follow-up statement saying customers in Cairo should expect to see interruptions in water service. The district also issued a boil-water order until further notice so that water could be tested for safety. Bottled water was being distributed at the Cairo Fire Department, the utility said.

The utility plans to keep in touch with customers through notifications, media reports and through public officials.
