Cape Girardeau County no-burn order lifted

Weekend rain prompted Cape Girardeau County to lift a burn ban Monday that has been in place for weeks due to high temperatures and drought.

The Cape Girardeau County Commission approved lifting the ban during its Monday meeting.

Commissioners said fire safety officials advised that rain received throughout the area Sunday was sufficient cause for lifting the ban, which has been in effect since late June. The city of Jackson also lifted its burn ban Monday, and the city of Cape Girardeau canceled its order Friday, according to the cities' fire departments.

Scott County has not yet lifted its ban, but commissioners meet Tuesday morning and may consider it, according to the Scott County clerk's office.

The National Weather Service rain gauge at the Cape Girardeau airport measured 0.45 inches of rain since Thursday, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Robin Smith. The same gauge measured 2.24 inches of rain so far in July, which is below the monthly average of 3.34 inches.
