Officials with the city of Cape Girardeau are warning of a scam where potential criminals are masking their phone number to appear to be calling from the city to obtain personal banking information.

The alleged scam occurs when a person on the phone asks questions about a city utility account, according to a news release.

The city urges residents to not give personal information over the phone. If people should receive such calls, they should hang up and call customer service at city hall at (573) 339-6322.

The police department is investigating the scam, according to the news release.
