Linda Stevens showed Champion Sunbrook Buckskin Gal, a female miniature pinscher, nicknamed Penny, during competition in the 65th annual All-Breed Dog Show sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Kennel Club. Penny won best in show at the A.C. Brase Arena. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

Cape Girardeau firefighters stood by an automobile which dragged a gas pump from the Fill-Up Mart, 305 N. Frederick St. Sparks from the gas pump, still wedged tightly under the rear of the car, ignited gasoline in the pump housing. The fire was directly under the car's fuel tank. Ivan Majka, a mail carrier who responded to the scene with a fire extinguisher from the post office across three street, and reserve police officer John LaPlante, who grabbed a fire extinguisher from inside the store, helped put out the flames.
