Sunday was a pleasant day for a variety of outdoor activities, including flying kites and fishing, as temperatures soared into the 70s before a nighttime thunderstorm. The weekend's mild weather gave Girardeans the first real taste of spring, which was officially just a week away. Fishing in the Capaha Park Lagoon were Brian Jones and Allen Niswonger. Mike Kassel of Cape Girardeau skied past the Cape Girardeau riverfront during a New Year's Day fund-raising event. Kassel and Jeff Teaters, also of Cape Girardeau, held the "Ski Freeze" to raise funds for Terry Frayser of Cape Girardeau. Members of the Honkers Boat Club skied New Year's Day for several years to raise money for various charities. They missed doing so in 1991, because of ice on the river.
