Bill Fulton, a challenger for the Republican nomination for Bollinger County presiding commissioner, requested Tuesday night a recount of primary election votes after returns showed he was defeated by one vote.

The incumbent, Elwood Mouser, garnered 453 votes to Fulton's 452, according to Tuesday night's unofficial count. A third contender, Bill Nitsch, received 184 votes.

Fulton filed a request for a recount Tuesday night with Bollinger County clerk Diane Holzum. She will forward that petition Wednesday to Bollinger County prosecuting attorney Bill Hopkins, who will prepare Fulton's request and send it to Jefferson City, Fulton said.

"It just goes to show you that every vote counts," Fulton said. "When it's just one vote's difference, it would be foolish not to ask for a recount."

Fulton said it was unclear when the recount would take place.

Mouser said he wasn't surprised that the election result was so tight. "Politics is all surprises," he said.

But that was about all he had to say.

"I really don't have nothing to say on it, however it works out," he said.

Mouser will face Democrat Kenny Trentham in November.
