A child was thrown from a vehicle Friday afternoon in a collision at the intersection of Independence and Pacific streets.
Cape Girardeau police officer Jason Jurgens said a white Pontiac Grand Am GT traveling south on Pacific Street stopped at the stop sign, then continued into the intersection into the path of a blue-and-white Lincoln Navigator traveling west on Independence.
A four-way traffic light that had been in place at the intersection for many years was removed by the city in May after traffic studies determined the signals were no longer needed.
One child was thrown from the vehicle they were riding in and was transported, along with another child, via Cape County Private Ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The extent of the victims' injuries was unknown, Jurgens said.
Both vehicles appeared to have front-end damage, and the airbag was deployed on the Grand Am. Both cars were towed from the scene.
Jurgens said wet road conditions did not contribute to the accident, instead citing failure to yield on the part of the Grand Am driver.
