New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Dec. 6 in the church fellowship hall. The meeting was opened with the reciting of the UMW Purpose.

The minutes were read by Gale King, secretary, and approved as read. The financial report was given by Mary Klaproth, in the absence of Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer. Betty Henry moved to accept the financial report as presented. Elwanda Corbin seconded. The motion passed.

Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, reported that she had given Ruth Piper, district resource chairwoman, names of five members of New McKendree UMW who had completed the requirements for the reading program this year. They were: Shirley Patterson, Patsy Johnson, Amy Cook, Laura Jo Smith and Edith Eggers.

Klaproth reported that the caps and mittens collected on the Christmas tree by UMW and other church members will be sent to three places -- Hope House, the Safe House for Women and the Jackson School District.

Cook announced that all mission ribbons are now $2 each.

June Engel gave a report on the bereavement dinner served for the Holloway family and the food tray sent to the Schreiner family.

Joy Baker and Joy McIntyre were introduced as first-time attendants to UMW.

The Wesleyan Circle won the attendance pin and they hosted the Jackson Manor birthday party on Dec. 6. The Mary and Martha Circle will host the party in January.

Klaproth thanked Jan Burk, Doris Dace, Betty Henry, and Gladys Nitsch for helping her assemble the program books for 2012.

Sue Smith from the Wesleyan Circle presented special mission recognition pins to Elizabeth McClary and Geraldine Davis. Pam Jones from the Mary and Martha Circle presented a pin to Janice Burk. Those receiving this pin are recognized as someone who has served "over and above" the call of duty for their past and present work in the general and circle meetings, as well as, meetings and programs beyond the local church.

The program was given by the members at large. Mary and Martha circle served refreshments.

The next meeting will be a mission team meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 3. The next regular general UMW meeting will be prayer and self denial with a stone soup luncheon at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 7.

The meeting closed with a reading from the Prayer Calendar.

Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi gathered at the home of Susan Benton on Dec. 6.

Five members enjoyed a shopping/dining trip to Kimmswick, Mo., on Dec. 4.

Toys were gathered by members to donate to the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Debbie Balsano, where the group will have its Christmas party and gift exchange.

Cape Girardeau County FCE Council

The Cape County FCE Council meeting was held on Dec. 1. Inez Statler, president, opened meeting with the pledges to the American and Missouri flags.

The devotion was given by Marilyn Retherford from Oak Ridge Club.

Roll Call was answered by 28 members and guests. Mary Klaproth, secretary, read minutes. The treasurer's report was given my the treasurer.

JoAnn Hahs gave a report on the state meeting that was held in Springfield, Mo. Cape Girardeau County had a lot of winning reports: community successful project, JoAnn Hahs, first place; health, Ruth Petzoldt, first place; international, Klaproth, first place; membership and marketing, Jobyna Daume, first place; public policy, Klaproth, first place; scholarship, Dortha Strack, first place; youth and education, Retherford, first place; and home and community environment, Nelda Crader, second place.

Members will be do sewing for the autism project on Feb, 1.

All Clubs Day will be April 2.

Judy Herbst gave a report on the district meeting on Oct. 4 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. There were 14 Cape County FCE members at the meeting.

Strack gave a report on the leader training meeting on Oct. 28 in Farrar, Mo., with 25 people at meeting.

Retherford gave a report on the literacy contest. Also, the winner of the Cape County FCE scholarship is Charlotte Schaffner, granddaughter of Barbara Schaffner.

Klaproth gave the tour committee report on the three trips that were taken.

Strack reported that she mailed three sympathy cards.

The morning program was services of Crosstrails Medical Clinic by Ginny Chapman. It has three convenient locations: Cape Girardeau, Advance, Mo., and Marble Hill, Mo. Crosstrails provides medical, dental, and mental health services.

Town and Country had the prayer before the meal catered by Branding Iron.

The afternoon program was "A History Story" done by Mariess Lesch, Hahs, Crader, and Klaproth about the years of FCE.

Mary Gosche, human development specialist, gave Statler her past president's pin and installed the new officers for 2012: JoAnn Hahs (Lamplighters), president; Judy Herbst (Kage), vice president; Mary Klaproth (Town and Country), recording secretary; Sue Jones (Town and Country), corresponding secretary; Jeannie Rehak (Oak Ridge), treasurer; and Barbara Barks (Oak Ridge), public relations.

After installation of officers, the silent auction winners and door prizes were given out.

Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution met Dec. 9 at the Missouri Veterans Home to share a luncheon with the five female residents staying there. The ladies living there now are Eleanor Brewton, U.S. Navy; Normandy Myer, Navy; Patti Landsman, U.S. Air Force; Dorothy Young, U.S. Army; and Yvonne Sale, Air Force. Poinsettias were presented to each of them.

There were nine chapter members who attended.

The activities were handled by Paula Wyckoff and Eva Cannon, attendants.

Shelia Holloway, regent, led the meeting with a prayer followed by lunch.

Town and Country FCE Club

Members of Town and Country FCE Club held their Christmas dinner and party Dec. 8 at Grecian Steak House in Cape Girardeau.

Darlene McCain, president, held a brief business session by members repeating the pledges to the U.S. and Missouri flags and club collect. Roll call was answered by members naming favorite Christmas song. Pennies for "coins for friendship" were collected.

The new 2012 program books were distributed and reviewed. Darlene McCain reported on the recent FCE Council meeting held Dec. 1 and thanked Town and Country members for successfully hosting the luncheon. The spring district meeting is scheduled for April 24 in Perry County.

Christmas treat bags were assembled for Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center to be delivered at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Darlene McCain, retiring president, installed new officers for 2012: Mary Klaproth, president; Lois Seabaugh, vice president; Sue Jones, secretary; Linda Thompson, treasurer; and Darlene McCain, reporter.

Secret pal gifts were exchanged and new names were drawn for the new year.

The club's annual birthday party is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Grecian Steak House and will include a "pound auction" and members are to bring a birthday gift for their secret pal. Joyce King and Klaproth will be in charge of arrangements.
