The city will soon construct a service club "Welcome to Jackson" sign. If a local service club meets a few general guidelines it will be allowed to display up to a 30-inch in diameter logo of its organization on this sign. We feel many of our local service clubs deserve this recognition for all the hard work they do and for the funds they put back into the community.

Our American Legion Post 158 recently held its 78th birthday banquet. We are honored to have such an active American Legion and auxiliary post in Jackson.

Most Jackson folks were either in Columbia or by their radio as I was recently as the Jackson High School Girls' Basketball team played in the State 4A final four. How many schools in Missouri can match the record of our Lady Indians the past several years? Not many, if any. We are all proud of your outstanding season and your second place finish in the 4A state tournament. Coaches Cook and Sides and all the players represented their school and their community with a lot of class.

The local cable access channel 5 has recently become somewhat of a concern to some Jackson residents wanting to display their organizations upcoming events and being told they cannot do so. The city of Cape Girardeau is running access channel 5 and paying all the expenses that go wit it. At the present time, only Cape Girardeau events are being displayed. Our cable provider TCI is making this channel available to Cape Girardeau. I have instructed our city attorney to research this issue to see if we too are entitled to a cable access channel per our franchise agreement. If so, we will discuss the issue with TCI and explore the costs that would have to be incurred to see if it is feasible for Jackson. The possibility also exists that we could reach some type of agreement with Cape Girardeau to have our events displayed on the present access channel.

A new park maintenance building that was budgeted for this year will soon be constructed in Brookside Park. The new building will be a major improvement for our park system which has expanded quite a bit in the last five years.

The multi-purpose building feasibility committee has heard presentations from officials from Perryville and Farmington explaining their buildings and answering many questions from our committee. The feasibility study committee has divided into several sub committees. The first subcommittee the community will hear from will be the survey committee. You will be asked your opinions about a possible multi-purpose facility by phone, mail or newspaper. It is your input that will help decide whether to move forward with this project and if we do move forward get your ideas as to what type of facility would best serve Jackson.

The council meets every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall in Jackson. Your ideas and input are always welcome.
