District 2 Commissioner Jay Purcell relied on union donations and retired firefighter Charles Brawley used personal funds to fuel their campaigns for Cape Girardeau presiding commissioner during the first three weeks of the month.

Purcell and Brawley filed their campaign disclosure reports in person at the Cape Girardeau County clerk's office, while the other four Republican candidates in the Aug. 3 primary filed electronically with the Missouri Ethics Commission. Purcell filed his report on time Monday, while Brawley's was filed a day late on Tuesday.

Purcell reported $6,875 in donations and a $2,000 loan to his campaign for the period of July 1 to Thursday. He has raised $13,005, including a total of $6,000 in loans to the campaign, and had $10,248 on hand at the end of the period. He reported no spending during the period.

His donations included $5,850 from labor unions, with the largest being $2,000 from the Central Trades and Labor Council in Cape Girardeau, $1,500 from the SEMO Labor Club in Cape Girardeau and $1,000 from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562 in St. Louis.

Brawley reported spending $2,633 on advertising during the period, which he paid for with his own funds. He reported receiving a $30 contribution as well. Brawley reported raising $9,489.20, most of which he has funded with his own money, and had $480 on hand at the end of the reporting period.

Purcell and Brawley are competing with farmer Stephen Daume of Daisy, financial adviser Chris Hutson of Cape Girardeau, businessman Doyle Parmer of Dutchtown and state Rep. Clint Tracy of Cape Girardeau for the GOP nomination. The winner will face the Democratic winner, either Pat Wissman, a retired truck driver, or Brian Thomas, a Gordonville businessman, in the Nov. 2 election.
