Sons of Union Veterans will meet Tuesday

The R.J. Oglesby Camp 61, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, at 112 E. Washington in Jackson, for the swearing in of new officers. This local chapter is part of the Department of Missouri, SUVCW.

Randy Royce of Cape Girardeau will assume the office of camp commander.

Formed in 1996, Camp 61 works to keep alive the memory of Union soldiers and sailors who served during the Civil War. The camp's namesake, Richard J. Oglesby, rose to the rank of general of Union troops. He later served as governor of Illinois.

Children invited to library for storytime

Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to the Cape Girardeau Public Library for storytime at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Storytime gives children an opportunity to explore the fun of reading, a short film and a craft. This week's theme is "Let it Snow."

St. Denis holding 'Big Ticket Raffle'

BENTON, Mo. -- St. Denis Home and School in Benton is holding a "Big Ticket Raffle." For $20 per ticket, participants receive 10 chances to win cash.

First prize is $1,000, second prize is $500 and third prize is $250. Seven $100 prizes will be given out. The drawing will be held Saturday, March 8, at the organization's annual dinner auction. Winners need not be present.

Rainbow Rush will take place this week

Rainbow Rush will kick off this week with an informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the University Center Party Room. Rush will continue Thursday with Movie Night, in which participants will view "The Birdcage" at 7 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. A dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday in the University Center Ballroom to close this week's activities.

Rainbow Rush is opening week for Southeast Missouri State University's Rainbow Alliance, a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender organization. Refreshments will be served every night. Visit www6.semo.edu/RainbowAlliance for more information.

Tickets going fast for Boss Gobblers' banquet

Tickets are disappearing fast for the Bootheel Boss Gobblers' 19th annual Super Fund Banquet and Art Auction to be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Bavarian Halle in Fruitland.

Seating is limited. More than 500 people attended this event last winter, making it one of the largest banquets in the area, according to organizer Allen "Horntagger" Morris. All tickets were sold in advance last year.

The Bootheel Boss Gobblers is a chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. For tickets or more information, call Morris at 450-2186.

Scott Co. assessment lists have been mailed

BENTON, Mo. -- Scott County 2003 personal property assessment lists have been mailed and should be returned by March 1 in order to avoid any penalties.
