Schlosser selected as Leadership Scholar

Christine Schlosser, daughter of Joseph and Patricia Schlosser of Cape Girardeau and graduate of Central High School, was recently selected as a Truman Leadership Scholar by Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.

The Truman Leadership Scholarship recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated leadership in both the classroom and extracurricular activities.

VFW, Ladies Auxiliary welcome visitors

THEBES, Ill. -- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 and the Ladies Auxiliary sponsored a meal and presentation for the Thebes Junior Volunteer Fire Department. Leaders of the volunteers are Lisa Hale and Linda Bevins; Amber Kennedy serves as president. There were 17 people present.

In addition to Post 3838, distinguished guests included the American Legion and Auxiliary and the Marine Corps League. A meal was prepared by Pete Rhodes and Wanda Blankenship. After the meal, Blankenship and Americanism chairman Judy Biester presented a program called "All About the American Flag."

Jim Carver and Robert Young showed the group how to fold the American flag and explained what each fold symbolized. Biester and Blankenship presented a flag to Kennedy.

Mobile Adoption Clinic to be held at PETCO

A Mobile Adoption Clinic will be held at PETCO in Cape Girardeau from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and at the Cape Wal-Mart from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. Volunteers are needed for both events, says the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. Call 334-5837 to volunteer.

Civil War Round Table plans to meet Sunday

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Civil War Round Table will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Room at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road in Cape Girardeau.

The program will include two short videos, one specially prepared by Dr. John Y. Simon of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale's History Department and one aired recently from the Ken Burns' Civil War Series. For more information, contact Rob Weeks at 335-8361 or Michael Hahn at 334-1928.

Beginning Experience to hold Halloween dance

Beginning Experience of Cape Girardeau/Southeast Missouri is hosting a public Halloween dance from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Parish Gym in Cape Girardeau (located a block northeast of Caruthers and Broadway streets).

Charlie's Music Revue will provide the music. Beginning Experience is an organization whose purpose is to help widowed, separated and divorced persons adjust to their single lives.

Antiques and collectibles show planned at Arena

The 2002-2003 Semi-Annual Community Counseling Center Foundation Antiques and Collectibles Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the A.C. Brase Arena Building in Cape Girardeau.

Admission is $1. A pre-sale will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. Admission to the pre-sale is $5.

Proceeds will benefit the Community Counseling Center Foundation of Cape.

Cape parks department tp sponsor happenings

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor Halloween Happenings at the Osage Community Centre on Sunday.

Registration will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. A Coloring Contest for ages 3-4 and 5-7, as well as a Pumpkin Carving or Decorating Contest for ages 8-9 and 10-12 will be held from 3 to 4 p.m.

Participants must bring their own pumpkin, carving tools and supplies. A hay maze and numerous games will also be available during this time.

The Costume Carnival will start at 4 p.m. Age groups range from under 2, 2-4, 5-8 and 9-12. Participants may enter in one of the following categories: funniest, scariest, cutest or most creative. A Magic Show is scheduled after the costume carnival. For more information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 335-5421 or 334-2859.
