Salvation Army's red kettles to return

At 5 p.m. Sunday the Salvation Army will light the annual Tree of Lights at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park. The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band will add to the festivities.

Following the season's kickoff, the 112-year red kettle tradition will be seen regularly at stores, malls and other locations throughout Cape Girardeau and Jackson. Last year, funds donated at these kettles enabled the Salvation Army to serve 1,250 families at Christmas and throughout the year. For more information about becoming part of the Salvation Army's Christmas services call 335-7000.

Zonta Club wins awards at KC conference

The Zonta Club of the Cape Girardeau area recently received five awards at the district conference in Kansas City. Zonta International is a worldwide service organization of executives in business working together to advance the status of women.

Zontian Cheryl Mothes was voted district director for the upcoming year. The club won a silver public relations and communications award; a gold United Nations award; a gold organization, membership and classification award; a gold status of women service award and a silver governor's award.

AARP sponsors driver safety certification

AARP is sponsoring the 55 Alive Safety Driving Course from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Southeast Missouri Hospital, Room 101, and on Nov. 21 at the hospital's Harrison Room. Each class is approximately four hours long. You must attend both days to be awarded a certificate of completion. For more information call Robert Harper, instructor, at 243-2396.

March of Dimes Web site fights premature births

Prematurity Awareness Day is Nov. 18. During November visit marchofdimes.com to learn more and click on the baby band. When you do, March of Dime's sponsors will donate $1 for research. The March of Dimes will take these "clicks" to Congress to demonstrate the intensity of interest in increasing the amount of research dollars available to find the causes of premature birth.

Masonic Lodge to install officers Saturday

St. Mark's No. 93 Masonic Lodge will install lodge officers for 2003 to 2004 at 7 p.m. Saturday. The installation is open to the public and refreshments will follow the ceremony.

Conference will mark 40 years since JFK shooting

"The 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy" will be the topic of a Southeast Missouri Historical Conference at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the University Ballroom of Southeast Missouri State University. The conference will feature a film from Dallas in 1963, Kennedy clips and a brief lecture.
