Audubon group plans Mississippi River tour

The National Audubon Society's Upper Mississippi River campaign is co-sponsoring a river trip Friday, with the American Land Conservancy, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Missouri Department of Conservation to look at potential side channel habitat acquisitions in the Cape Girardeau area.

Boat tours will be offered and will depart from the Redstar Boat Landing at 10 a.m. at Cape Girardeau for Schenimann Chute upstream from Cape Girardeau and return sometime in the early afternoon. The group will look at the potential of developing side channel habitat and acquisitions that may include bike trails along the river, said Jon Stravers, a spokesman for the campaign.

Lions Club schedules anniversary banquet

The Cape Girardeau Evening Lions Club will hold its 10th anniversary banquet at Drury Lodge Friday.

Dr. Dwayne Garrett of Wentzville, Mo., past International Lions Club director, will be guest speaker.

Group to hold seminar on writing family history

The Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society will sponsor a family history writing seminar from noon to 4 Saturday at the Riverside Regional Library in Benton.

Committee members will be on hand to help people compile and write their family history for inclusion in the upcoming Scott County History Book on families of Scott County.

Orders for the book will be taken at the seminar.

Television show to hear Project Hope discussion

Denis Rigdon, coordinator of Project Hope, will be guest speaker on "Independently Speaking," which will air on WDKA-TV Channel 17 and cable access Channel 5.

Rigdon will discuss the services offered by Project Hope. The program will air at 5:30 a.m. Sunday on WKDA and at 7:30 p.m. April 16 and 30 on Channel 5.

Organ, tissue donor awareness walk set

The 15th annual Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Walk will be held April 20, starting behind the Southeast Missourian and ending at the downtown pavilion across from Hutson's Fine Furniture.

Participants will gather behind the Missourian at 1 p.m. The walk starts at 1:30.

The event marks National Organ-Tissue Donor Awareness Week.

The walk will include a banner contest. Banners that depict the organ and tissue donor theme must be registered by 1 p.m. For information, contact Cheri Huckstep-Reed at 335-2229, or Breita V. Church, 332-0070.-- From staff reports
