Letter carriers sponsor stamp out hunger drive
The 14th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation, was held recently. Letter carriers from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City collected nonperishable food items for local food banks. With the community's help, nearly 10,000 pounds in donations were collected by the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1015.
Students from the Central Middle School student council, Central Junior High School PTO and Central High School Student Council held a school supply drive for tornado-stricken students in Caruthersville, Mo., recently. They collected school supplies, books, educational games and $330.
The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society meets at 7:30 p.m Tuesday at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. The program is "Using Cemetery Information to Research Your Family," presented by Dr. Bill Eddleman. The society meets bimonthly on the fourth Tuesday; nonmembers are welcome at all meetings. The memorial service for Dry Creek Cemetery in Bollinger County will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery with a business meeting to follow.
The memorial service for Proffer Cemetery at Crump will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery with the Rev. Mike Huffman bringing the message.
Descendants of Scott and Carolina Achtermann Eakins will gather from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 28 at Capaha Park shelter No. 1, Cape Girardeau. A potluck meal will be served at noon. A Christian music concert featuring Steve Hornbeak, Cape Bible Chapel Praise Team, The Whistlestop Wesleys and Restless Spirit will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 4 at New McKendree South Campus, 1770 S. Hope St. in Jackson. Doors open at 6 p.m. Concessions and baby-sitting available. A free-will offering will be taken.
The Crader reunion will begin at 9 a.m. June 11. A business meeting and election of one board member will be at 10 a.m., and an auction of hand-crafted items will be at 11 a.m., followed by lunch. Bring food to share, table service, soft drinks and chairs. The auction will benefit Crader Cemetery, four miles east of Marble Hill. A Crader Family Book will be available for purchase.
