An Aug. 13 fire at Delta High School and five structure fires that have occurred in isolated areas in Cape Girardeau County are most likely not connected, Lt. David James of the sheriff's department said Monday.

The department has ruled all of the fires as arson and is still seeking suspects connected to the incidents.

"We have had several people that their names have been thrown around and we've talked to them, but we don't have solid evidence one way or another that points to a suspect," James said, speaking of the high school arson.

Although items stolen from the high school Aug. 13 may help investigators eventually identify a suspect in that fire, there was no evidence left behind at the barn and shed fires near Millersville, Oak Ridge and Fruitland.

"We really don't have a good suspect. It's upsetting to those older people and farmers who have lost their property," James said.

Deputies working overnight shifts have stepped up patrols in the more isolated areas of the county looking for suspicious activity, James said.

The sheriff's department continues to ask for the public's help and that anyone with information call the department at 243-3551.
