Missouri State Water Patrol divers found a vehicle in the Mississippi River Friday downstream from the Union Electric water plant pump station at Cape Girardeau.

A Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman said it will be at least Monday before any attempt is made to retrieve it.

He said divers were unable to determine Friday if the vehicle, which appeared to be a van, was occupied.

Authorities had been searching the river since Thursday for a vehicle that apparently plunged into the river at the pump station near Cape Rock.

The vehicle was found wedged between rocks in about 25 feet of water, the police spokesman said. He said divers reported that they were hampered by a swift current and poor visibility.

The vehicle is situated close to the navigation channel. The police spokesman said Saturday that the Coast Guard would be contacted to see if it could assist in raising it.
