HICKMAN, Ky. -- A western Kentucky ferry that connects Kentucky and Missouri closed Tuesday for about a week.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the Dorena-Hickman Ferry is going to a Memphis shipyard to be outfitted for a new barge. It's expected to take a week but may be longer. Afterward, the U.S. Coast Guard will inspect the ferry for safety before it returns to service.

The ferry connects Kentucky Highway 1354 at Hickman with Missouri Route A and Highway 77 near Dorena, Missouri. It is the only direct route between the two states.

Kentucky and Missouri are the only border states that aren't directly connected by a road or bridge.
