EAST PRAIRIE -- Mississippi County voters said yes to concealed weapons, but no to an upgrade for 911 services and two tax extensions in Tuesday's elections.

Missouri Proposition B, which would have allowed residents to obtain licenses to carry concealed weapons, passed handily, 1,860-965, with 2,903 voters participating.

Proposition A, which would have levied a 50-cent tax on cellular phone users to cover upgrades on 911 systems in the state, was rejected 1,503-1,214.

Voters in East Prairie rejected two tax extensions. One proposal, a 10-year extension of a sales tax of one half of 1 percent to finance street improvements, was defeated 430-207.

It was the second time voters said no to the issue, which covers the cost of paving gravel roads and resurfacing deteriorated routes.

The tax, first approved in 1989, failed 457-354 in November's election. A simple majority was needed for passage.

East Prairie voters also rejected a five-year extension to a 19-cent real property tax to cover the city's operating costs. The tax, defeated 380-270, would have generated some $20,000 a year towards the city's general fund. The money would have been used to support parks and for maintenance and improvements to the swimming pool.

In addition to the tax proposals, East Prairie voters re-elected Mayor Lonnie Thurmond, Ward 1 alderman Shirley Pritchett, Ward 2 alderman Kenny Walton and Ward 3 alderman Avery Hutcheson.
