A Cape Girardeau home sustained moderate smoke and fire damage Saturday, according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 407 S. Louisiana Ave. and found fire showing on one side of the single-story structure. Fire was also reported in the attic.

Ceilings were removed to expose hidden fire in the attic in the front rooms of the structure. Two large holes were cut in the roof to remove smoke. All other crews assisted with fire attack, ventilation and primary search.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. Damage to the home is estimated at $40,000.

A woman sustained a minor burn to her left lower leg but refused medical treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fireworks have been ruled out, and the fire is considered suspicious.
