The Cape Girardeau Fire Department assisted a man in his 50s evacuated from his home surrounded by flood waters Monday morning in the 1000 block of North Fountain Street.

Capt. Dustin Keller said the water was just reaching the man's house, built up high on a foundation, at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, but in the surrounding areas it was as deep as 3 feet. Firefighters used an inflatable boat to help the man and his belongings to his car, which was on dry land, Keller said.

Keller said this was the first evacuation within the city limits of Cape Girardeau, but the department is watching the Red Star District, bordering Sloan Creek to the south and the Mississippi River to the east.
