A fire broke out about 1 p.m. Wednesday at 710 Morgan Oak St. in Cape Girardeau.
No one was in the home at the time, and the blaze was resolved quickly, said assistant chief Mark Hasheider of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. The house is divided into two apartments.
Although no injuries were reported, ambulances were on the scene.
Hasheider said the fire began in the front apartment, where significant damage occurred. Smoke was the main cause of damage in the rear apartment. Five people lived in the two units -- two adults in the front and one adult with two children in the back.
Hasheider said a cause had not been determined, but the fire was not considered suspicious.
The intersection of Sprigg and Morgan Oak streets was closed after the blaze, with police officers detouring drivers.
