ANNA, Ill. -- Illinois Department of Conservation site technicians Mark Clary and Harold Green are used to helping wildlife, but Friday they helped a life that wasn't so wild.

About 2 p.m. some passersby notified conservation officers that a dog was on a floating log in the Union County Wildlife Refuge about one mile from the conservation office.

Clary and Green used a boat to reach the cold, wet poodle that was floating on an 8-foot log surrounded by 4-foot deep water and about 200 yards from land.

"As cold as he was he wasn't going anywhere; he was sticking to the log, Clary said. He couldn't hardly walk the log he was so stiff and cold."

The poodle, a white female about 2 years-old with no collar, was treated to some vegetable soup at the conservation office. The officers don't know the circumstances surrounding it getting onto the log.

Anyone wanting to give the dog a home can call the conservation office at 618-833-5175.
