A Jackson man has been charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer after an incident Monday night at the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

According to police spokesman Darin Hickey, Timothy D. Lesch, 49, was brought to the station for protective custody and was placed in a holding room at the jail to await a medical and psychological evaluation. Hickey said Lesch appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance and while in the room began damaging jail property. When an officer entered the room to subdue him, Lesch allegedly began punching the officer in the head, face and shoulders, Hickey said. Lesch was subdued by officers and moved to a jail cell. He has been charged with second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and is being held on a $10,000 bond at the Cape Girardeau County Jail.
