Blanchard students shop at annual holiday store

Almost 300 children at Blanchard Elementary spent "holiday dollars" they earned for good behavior and academic achievement as they shopped for loved ones at the school's annual holiday store.

Over 1,500 gifts were donated from individuals and businesses in the community.

Volunteers from groups like Commerce Bank, Hutson's Fine Furniture, the Cape Girardeau police and fire departments and Caring Community served as gift-wrappers and shoppers' helpers for each student.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson, officer Aaron Brown, principal Barbara Kohlfield and superintendent Mark Bowles wrapped gifts.

Alkan to graduate from University of Oklahoma

Laurie Anne Alkan of Cape Girardeau is among the fall 2002 graduation candidates at the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Okla. Alkan will receive her masters degree in human relations.

Oak Ridge money goes toward basketball goals

The Oak Ridge Schools Foundation recently received an anonymous donation of $12,500 for the purchase of equipment for the district's new multipurpose activity center.

The benefactor requested the funds be used for partial payment on six basketball goals to be installed in the facility.

Originally, the district was planning to install only two of the goals, but the donation will allow the addition of side basketball goals as well, which will relieve the congested schedule of the current gymnasium.

Scott City student to join national society

Megan Ressel of Scott City was recently selected for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars.

The Society inducts only the most outstanding high school students and honors them for superior academic achievement.

Ressel is the daughter of Patrick and Penny Ressel of Kelso, Mo.

O'Brien picked for Elks' student of the month

Amanda O'Brien of Scott City was chosen as the Cape Girardeau Elks' student of the month for December.

She is the daughter of Patrick and Sally O'Brien of Scott City and is involved with the National Honor Society, student council, FBLA, Pep Club, Model United Nations, Art Club, basketball, volleyball, softball and cheerleading.
