Jackson student wins foundation scholarship

Jabarie E. Glass of Jackson has been named a Freedom Alliance scholarship winner.

Glass, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Glass, is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi.

Freedom Alliance is an educational and charitable foundation dedicated to preserving the American heritage of freedom.

Dependent children of military personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty or who are classified as POW or MIA are eligible for the scholarship.

Local students to enter skills competition

Area students named to university honor rolls

B.A. Tenkhoff of Cape Girardeau was named to the fall 2002 semester chancellor's honor roll at the University of Mississippi.

A grade-point average of 3.75 to 4.0 is required of full-time students carrying at least 12 semester hours of classes in order to be on the chancellor's honor roll.

Adam M. Davis, Allison Brune, Luke Legrand and Michael Sirimaturos of Cape Girardeau were named to the fall 2002 semester dean's honor roll at the University of Mississippi.

A grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74 is required of full-time students carrying at least 12 semester hours of classes to be on the dean's honor roll.

Jackson soprano selected by national organization

Lindsey Chubboy of Jackson has been selected to perform with The Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, a national performing organization.

Chubboy, who has been a soprano vocalist at Jackson High School and is also a member of the district choir, will perform in six European countries in 25 days this summer.

Kindergarten screenings to be held in March, April

Local school districts will hold kindergarten screenings and registration throughout the months of March and April.

DAR announces winners of good citizen awards

The Nancy Hunter Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently announced the winner of the club's Good Citizen Awards. Students from local schools wrote essays titled Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.

Winners were: Rebecca Cook, Delta High School, daughter of Ken and Diane Cook; Cory Scott Beussink, Notre Dame Regional High School, son of Mark and Geralyn Beussink; Katherine Mary Maginel, Central High School, daughter of Jim and Mary Maginel; Laura Glueck of Oak Ridge High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Glueck.

Jackson FBLA takes part in leadership conference

The Jackson Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America recently participated in the District 15 Leadership Conference at Southeast Missouri State University.

Jackson students Jenny Schlick and Casey Alderson were appointed to positions as District 15 secretary and parliamentarian for the 2003-2004 year by scoring the highest on a parlimentary procedure test as underclassmen.

The following Jackson students placed in the top five at the competition, and are now eligible to advance to the state conference in April:

Jackson student awarded President's Scholarship

Melisa Anderson of Jackson has been awarded a President's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-2004 academic year.

The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who achieve an ACT score of 24 or score 1110 on the SAT. Recipients also must rank in the upper 20 percent of their high school class or achieve a high school grade-point average of 3.5. The scholarship also is awarded to class valedictorians who score 21 on the ACT or 990 on the SAT, and to National Merit scholars.

The scholarship is worth $1,500 per academic year for up to four consecutive years.

Anderson is a senior at Jackson High School. She is the daughter of Gay Moore of Jackson and Louis Anderson of Olive Branch, Ill.

Stricker named to school of pharmacy's dean's list

Garrett Stricker of Charleston, Mo., has been named to the fall 2002 semester dean's list at St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

Stricker is the son of Carl and Bernadette Stricker of Charleston and is a 2002 graduate of Kelly High School in Benton, Mo.

Kelly student to instruct cheerleading camp

Sara Essner of Benton, Mo., was recently chosen to be an instructor for the National Cheerleading Association's summer camps.

Essner will graduate from Kelly High School in May and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where she received a president's scholarship.

She is the daughter of Stan and Shirley Essner of Benton.

Local man enrolls in Illinois technical institute

Jeremy J. Beaman of Cape Girardeau recently enrolled at the Universal Technical Institute in Glendale Heights, Ill.

Beaman plans to begin coursework in July to become a professional automotive/ diesel technician.

Leann Walther of Jackson has been awarded a Missouri Leadership Award and a Girl's State Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-2004 academic year.

The Missouri Leadership Award is a one-year award of $500 to be applied toward residence hall fees. Students receiving the scholarship must have achieved a 3.0 grade point average.

The Girl's State Leadership Award is a one-time award of $300 to be applied toward general fees and presented to beginning freshmen who have attended Girl's State and have a 3.0 grade point average after six high school semesters.

Walther is a senior at Jackson High School. She is the daughter of Ralph and Mary Walther of Jackson.

Area students awarded president's scholarships

Lance West of Cape Girardeau, Michael Heuring of Scott City and Todd G. Brucker of Oran, Mo., have been awarded president's scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Brucker also received a Missouri Leadership Award.

West, the son of Stan and Terri West of Cape Girardeau, is a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Heuring, the son of Larry and Angela Heuring of Scott City, attends Thomas W. Kelly High School at Benton, Mo.

Brucker, son of Gary and Beverly Brucker of Oran, is a senior at Thomas W. Kelly High School.

Prom fashion show nets $1,200 for Jackson FBLA

The Jackson Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America recently held a prom fashion show through which they earned $1,200 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The Andrew Jackson, Precious Memories and Weddings and Parties Complete, Sweetheart Florest and Dalton's Florist participated in the show. FBLA members served as models.

University offers opportunity for MBA

FULTON, Mo. -- William Woods University is offering Cape Girardeau area residents the opportunity to pursue a master of business administration degree without quitting work. The program will begin with an orientation at 6 p.m. April 7 at the Cape Girardeau Technology Center.

Southeast student earns Greef Award

Jessie Litzelfelner recently received the Robert J. Greef Award as Southeast Missouri State University's outstanding senior English education major.

Each college in Missouri chooses a student for this honor, which is based on scholarship, leadership, character and participation in professional activities.

Area violinist is member of all state orchestra

Violinist Erik Miller, son of Dr. Gary and Mary Miller of Cape Girardeau, was a member of the 2003 Missouri All State Orchestra.

Membership to the orchestra is determined by auditions, which were held last December. In January, the orchestra held a concert in conjunction with the Missouri Music Educators Convention at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Mo.

Miller studies privately with Brandon Christianson at Southeast Missouri State University and is a member of the orchestra at Central High School.

Moore, Moreton among top 100 graduating students

Central High School students Carissa Moore and Andrew Moreton have been selected for the 2003 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of the state's top graduating students.

Moore and Moreton will be recognized at a luncheon in Columbia, Mo., in April.

Qualification for the program, which is sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, is based on grade point average and college entrance exam scores.

Free Enterprise Scholarship applications available

Applications for the 2003 Free Enterprise Scholars Award from the National Federation of Independent Business are available at www.nfibeducationfoundation.org or by contacting Laura Martin at (800) NFIB-NOW.

A minimum of 100 non-renewable $1,000 scholarships are available to students entering their freshman year of an accredited two- or four-year university or college.

Ray receives Governor's Scholarship

Nathan Ray of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Governor's Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Missouri residents qualify for the Governor's Scholarship if they are valedictorians and have achieved either an ACT score of 30 or SAT score of 1340 or if they rank in the upper 3 percent of their high school class and have achieved an ACT score of 31 or SAT score of 1380, or been recognized as a National Merit or Achievement finalist.

The scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years if the recipient maintains a 3.5 grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and completes a minimum 30 credit hours per academic year.

Ray has been home schooled. He is the son of Timothy and Mary Ray of Cape Girardeau.

Oak Ridge ninth-graders win design competition

Oak Ridge School District ninth-graders Kyle Buchheit, Aaron Sedgewick and Tyler Williams recently won first place in the Middle School Design/Build Competition in Kansas City, Mo.

The students each received a $100 savings bond and have been invited back to Kansas City for a recognition banquet in April.

Students designed a house, drew a floor plan, estimated the cost of materials, built a model from foam board and wrote a report on construction careers for the project.

Other teams from Oak Ridge to participate in the competition were: sixth grade, Ethan Kester, Brandon Morrison, Steven Polhamus; seventh grade, Hannah Sedgwick, Rachel Sedwick, Mandy Tucker; eighth grade, Ashley Barks, Chelsea McCormick, Kia Thomas.

Kelly drama department to present comedy

The Kelly High School Drama Department will present "Rest Assured" at 7:30 p.m. March 20 & 21 in the high school gymnasium. The play is a comedy by Donald Payton and is suitable for all ages. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students.

Music festival to involved local schools

Twenty area schools will participate in the District Music Festival March 18, 19 and 22.

The festival will be held at Southeast Missouri State University and Central High School. At 6:30p.m. today, bands and an orchestra from Central and Jackson schools will perform in the University Center ballroom.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, bands will perform in the ballroom. Choir performances will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Brandt Musical Hall, and piano solo performances will be from 8 a .m. to 2 p.m. at the Academic Hall auditorium.

The festival will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at Central High School. All performances are free and open to the public.

A panel of judges will grade the musicians, and students earning a superior rating will compete in the state music contest at the University of Missouri.
