Smoking essay contest announces local winners

Local students recently honored in the Cape Girardeau County Area Medical Alliance's "Smoking Is Not For Me" essay contest were: Nicole Banda from Immaculate Conception School, first place; Jessica Dalton of Cape Christian School, second place; Brittany Louise Durham of Oak Ridge Middle School, third place; and Meg Goodman of Cape Christian School, Bradley Mott of Scott City School District, AunDrea Privette of Zalma School District and Kaycie Seyer of Oak Ridge Middle School, honorable mentions. Banda received third place in the statewide competition and Durham received first place.

Saxony artists recognized at recent art shows

The following Saxony Lutheran High School students placed at recent art shows:

Bootheel Regional Art Guild Show in Sikeston, Mo.: Jake Weber, second place for sculpture; John Volkerding, third place for printmaking/graphics; Amanda Berry, Casey Kertz, Hannah Winningham, and Dan Woolderidge received honorable mentions for their entries.

Paducah Womens Club 70th annual art show: Elizabeth Allen, second place; Jessica Stearns, second place; Ashley Mann, third place.

Miinch receives two scholarships to Ole Miss

Steve Miinch of Cape Girardeau has received the Academic Excellence and Academic Excellence nonresident scholarships to the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. for the fall 2005 semester. Miinch is the son of Steve and Patti Miinch. He is a senior at Central High School.

Area student named All-American Scholar

Andrew Glueck was recently named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. He is a student at Scott City High School and the son of Paul and Charla Glueck of Scott City.

Laxton sisters receive scholarships to Concordia

Christy and Angela Laxton of Scott City have each received a Regent's Scholarship from Concordia University in Seward, Neb., for the fall 2005 semester. They are the daughters of William and Sharon Laxton.

Advance student named distinguished scholar

Erin Cloninger has been named the 2005 Distinguished Scholar in graphic design at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. She is the daughter of Clark and Lisa Cloninger of Advance, Mo.

Sophomore pilgrimage includes area students

Kory Mueller, Kia Thomas and Taylor McMillan recently participated in the Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City, Mo. Mueller is from Saxony Lutheran High School. Thomas is from Oak Ridge High School. McMillan is from Central High School. All three were sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs Scope chapter in Cape Girardeau.

Jackson senior gets scholarship to SEMO

Madalyn Graham, a senior at Jackson High School has received an MFA Inc. Board of Directors scholarship. She is the daughter of Scott and Deborah Graham and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University.

Cummins qualifies for Who's Who honor society

Tiffany Cummins has qualified for induction into the honor society of Who's Who Among American High School Students. She is the daughter of Jerry and Pam Cummins.
