Book bugs with a tendency toward late book returns and a full pantry can use food items to pay late fees at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

The ninth annual Food for Fines program is under way at the library. Reference assistant Rhonda Cole said members will be credited 50 cents for every nonperishable food donation taken to the library through Dec. 31.

The library charges 5 cents per book for each day beyond the scheduled due date.

Some people have eradicated fines of up to $50 in the past. The program is only for overdue books and does not apply to replacement of materials or other library fees.

"Fines usually range anywhere from a nickel to $50," said Cole. "It does take part of the budget money, but they plan ahead for it. The library just feels it is a worthy cause and we're happy to participate."

The library generally collects between 500 and 700 items through the program that are donated to the FISH food pantry. Although most participants are paying off fines, others "just like the idea and just bring in food to donate," Cole said.

The Cape Girardeau Public Library is at 711 N. Clark St. For more information, contact Cole at 334-5279.
