Local garden club members attend convention

~ This year's theme was 'Bullfrogs and Butterflies.'

Three members of the Cape Girardeau Council of Garden Clubs, made up of the Four Season Garden Club, Ramblewood Garden Club and Rose Hills Garden Club, attended the 74th annual convention of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri in Hannibal, Mo., recently. "Bullfrogs and Butterflies" was the theme.

An award of honor, recognizing the outstanding contribution of one individual for at least a period of five years, was earned by Edna Ruth Fischer of the Four Seasons Garden Club. She was chosen for contributions to her club and community in the area of civic development, conservation, design, garden therapy, horticulture and all-around ideals of National Garden Clubs.

A purple ribbon for performance and second place standing for "Garden Club of the Year" were earned by the local Ramblewood Garden Club. The Cape Girardeau Council of Garden Clubs received a blue ribbon for its yearbook. Objectives of the council include stimulating a knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to aid in the protection of nature, trees, plants and birds and to encourage planting, working toward the beauty of Cape Girardeau. The council was organized in 1955 and federated in 1956.
